In a short time, artificial intelligence has moved from science fiction into your everyday toolkit. You may already be using it without realising: a chatbot that polishes your email, a filter that blocks spam, a recommendation that shows you exactly the right vacancy. But at the same time, developments are moving so fast that many people wonder: where is this heading, and are we still in control?
We’d love to hear from you. But first, let’s line up a few terms so we’re talking about the same thing.
Getting the terms straight
AI (artificial intelligence) is the broad umbrella term for systems that perform tasks we used to need a human for: writing text, recognising images, spotting patterns in data.
AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) goes a step further: a system that can’t just do one trick, but, like a human, can learn and reason broadly and flexibly about almost any subject. AGI does not exist (yet), but some researchers think it’s closer than we dare to admit.
Superintelligence is the stage after that: an intelligence that surpasses humans in virtually every area. For now this is theory, but it’s precisely this scenario that sparks the fiercest debates, from “greatest opportunity ever” to “existential risk”.
Opportunity or threat?
Opinions differ sharply, and there’s often truth on both sides:
- The optimist sees AI that detects diseases faster, takes over boring work and makes us more productive and creative.
- The cautious see jobs disappearing, disinformation growing and decisions increasingly being made by a system that no one truly understands.
A recurring question is whether we shouldn’t deliberately develop more slowly, taking more time for rules, safety and ethics, so that humans stay in control rather than the technology. Opponents counter: whoever slows down loses, and development won’t stop anyway.
And then there’s the question that keeps many people up at night: will I lose my job to AI? For some professions that fear is real, for others AI actually makes the work lighter or more enjoyable. The honest answer: no one knows for sure.
